This is a collage I did in honor of Emmett Till and Trayvon Martin: two adolescent black males both murdered as a result of hate crimes, in two different states, 67 years apart. The murder of Trayvon Martin happened just days before the release of the now infamous “KONY 2012” campaign by Invisibile Children. It was one of the earliest incidents in a 2012 that saw an average of 1 black person murdered every 36 hours by police officers, security guards, or self-appointed vigilantes between January 1 and June 30th. 67 years after the tragic, brutal murder of Emmett Till, we still live in a country that subjects African-Americans, and others of color, to racial profiling and random, unprovoked acts of violence and policing. I called my tribute “Invisible Children” because amidst all the racial violence occurring at home in 2012, American non-profit Invisible Children Inc. saw it fit to “campaign” on behalf of people (of the exact same demographic) over 8500 miles away, going through similar issues as those here at home, brought on by the same general conditions and external forces.
